Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Overview

The final part of the Single Maths B module will focus on probability, the mathematics of uncertainty. We will cover events and state spaces, conditional probability, random variables, expectation and variance, and several common probability distributions.

  • Course text - there isn't an official text for this portion of the course. Most introductory texts on probability will cover the key areas.

    The Schaum outline book S. Lipschutz, Probability provides lots of examples on fundamental concepts. Alternative, but more advanced treatments include is W. Feller, Introduction to Probability Theory and its Applications, Vol. I, and chapters 1-5 of DeGroot and Schervisch Probability and Statistics which goes on to develop the statistical concepts in more depth.
