Anthropology within Natural Sciences 2023-2024

This pages is primarily intended for existing students. It consists of modules available to Natural Sciences students, Joint-Honours regulations and general advice (which includes links to Departmental advice.)

The following lists the module code and the title of each module by the level of each module - clicking on the link will take you to further details listed in the Faculty Handbooks.

The last digit of the module code indicates whether the module is single, double or triple. The level indicates the year in which modules are normally taken, but it is often the case that students take modules from the adjacent level beneath the year of study. Visit the Subjects page for the general overarching rules and structure.

Please note that the modules on offer and the requirements for progression can change from year to year and that the only combinations of modules that are guaranteed to fit in the timetable are those splits between the two departments on an approved Joint Honours route (MSci and BSc).

Within Natural Sciences, Anthropology has BSc Joint-Honours programmes with: Biology.

In BSc students' final year, they are required to take no less than 20 credits and no more than 60 credits of Capstone Modules. These modules are denoted with G

Advice for progression and other aspects

Natural Sciences advice
Year 1

Taking two from: Health, Illness And Society (ANTH1041); People And Cultures (ANTH1061); Human Evolution And Diversity (ANTH1091); enhances progression into Level 2 modules. Choosing two modules entitles students to EITHER take Doing Anthropological Research (ANTH1101) which opens up Anthropology Dissertation Ch/hns/la (ANTH3382) in Year 3 OR Being Human: An Introduction To The History And Practice Ofanthropology (ANTH1111).
Progression from: ANTH1041; ANTH1061; ANTH1091; ANTH1101; ANTH3382; ANTH1111.

Year 2

Taking one of Politics And Economics (ANTH2051), Evolution, Variation And Adaptation (ANTH2061) or Our Place In Nature (ANTH2071) gives some progression into Level 3 Anthropology.
Taking Research Project Design (ANTH2187) and Reading Ethnography (ANTH2197) are compulsory to take your Capstone module in Anthropology.
If students have taken Organisms And Environment (BIOL1161) AND Genetics (BIOL1171) in Year 1, then it should be possible to take Evolution, Variation And Adaptation (ANTH2061) and Our Place In Nature (ANTH2071) without having taken any Anthropology at Level 1.
Progression from: ANTH2051; ANTH2061; ANTH2071; ANTH2187; ANTH2197; BIOL1161; BIOL1171.
