London Mathematical Society -- EPSRC Durham Symposium
New Moonshines, Mock Modular Forms and String Theory
Monday 3 August - Wednesday 12 August 2015
Castle Keep

The LMS-EPSRC Durham Research Symposia began in 1974, and form an established series of international research meetings, with over 100 symposia to date. They provide an excellent opportunity to explore an area of research in depth, to learn of new developments, and to instigate links between different branches. The format is designed to allow substantial time for interaction and research. The meetings are held in July and August, usually lasting for 10 days, with up to 70 participants, roughly half of whom will come from the UK. Lectures and seminars take place in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University.

Outline

This symposium is devoted to recent advances in new Moonshine phenomena triggered by the remarkable observation made in 2010 that there is a connection between the elliptic genus of K3 surfaces and the representation theory of the sporadic Mathieu group M24. The theme provides a focussed topic which however brings together experts from rather diverse areas in mathematics and physics, ranging from group theory, number theory and algebraic geometry to quantum field theory and string theory. The topics covered include Mathieu 24 and Umbral Moonshine, Vector Operator Algebras, Hyperkähler manifolds and extended supersymmetry, Mock modular forms, Non-Rational Conformal Field Theory and String Theory.

The formal scientific programme will start at 9am on Tuesday 4 August 2015 and will end on Wednesday 12 August around 3pm. There will be an open discussion on Wednesday 12 August afternoon, and participants are expected to leave either on Wednesday 12 August afternoon/evening or on Thursday 13 August after breakfast.
